Participant's Guide to Zoom

Meeting Controls

When you're in a Zoom meeting, you'll have access to the Zoom menu bar. The Zoom menu bar appears at the bottom of the Zoom window once the meeting begins. If you don't see the menu bar, move your mouse slightly, and the bar will appear. (The bar may disappear when in full-screen mode.)

With the Zoom menu bar, you can do the following:

  1. Mute/unmute your audio. If the microphone icon on your toolbar has a red diagonal line, you are currently muted. To unmute yourself to speak, click on the microphone to unmute. It's a courtesy to presenters to remain muted so that background noise (e.g., barking dogs, traffic, etc.) does not disrupt the presentation.
You can also select the up arrow next to the microphone to check your audio settings and/or change your audio output device (e.g., change from internal computer speakers to USB headset). If you have trouble hearing audio, click on this menu to test your speaker setup.
  2. Start/stop your video. Use this icon to turn on or off your webcam. Note: If you're experiencing video delays or lagging, consider turning off your camera to reduce your connection's network load.
  3. Invite more people to join by email, IM, or meeting ID.
  4. View a list of participants.
  5. Share your computer screen with participants if allowed by the meeting presenter.
  6. Send a message to the presenter and meeting participants.
  7. Record the meeting. Note: these meetings are automatically recorded and will be made available through the Professional Development Institute LibGuide.
  8. Leave the meeting session.
