Vikings Days of Service - Information for Employees

About Vikings Days of Service

In the fall of 2019, SJR State’s College initiative, Vikings Days of Service, was launched. With this initiative, SJR State made a commitment to provide members of our campus community with two opportunities each year to engage and serve within our three counties.

Vikings Fall into Service - September 13, 2024

In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under bipartisan federal law, as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the events of 9/11 and those who rose up in service in response. SJR State will honor the September 11th National Day of Service on a Friday near September 11.

Vikings Spring into Service - January 24, 2025

Vikings Days of ServiceIn 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community." The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – we have been challenged to, “Make it a day on, not a day off." SJR State will celebrate the MLK Day of Service the Friday following the three-day Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend.

The purpose of the Vikings Days of Service initiative is to:

  • Provide SJR State students, faculty, and staff meaningful service opportunities intended to address identified community needs;
  • Recruit a diverse cross-section of the College community and engage them as volunteers;
  • Honor sacrifice & service and support a legacy of servant leadership; and,
  • Provide SJR State students, faculty, and staff with opportunities for sustained service and ongoing community involvement
