As educators, we can agree that a variety of approaches to our content reaches the maximum number of students. Because of different learning styles, students sometimes have difficulty grasping the material despite a multi-angled approach. If the material is too daunting, maybe a side door can help. Maybe being more imaginative and catching the brain off-guard is in order. As a creative writer, I explore many imaginative avenues into academic writing and literature analysis. Can this work for other disciplines? Flash stories in argument? Poetry in chemistry? Writing dialogue in the social sciences? I’ll share some mini-activities with minimal preparation and implementation time that can potentially be the breakthrough that some students need. Attendees will have opportunities to try the activities individually and collaboratively and share brainstorming ideas on way to engage their students through creative writing.
