Learning in Community: The Advantages and Pitfalls of Student Cohorts
To date, nearly 150 students have been enrolled in the Fleet Readiness Center Southeast (FRCSE) apprenticeship program at SJR State, in which groups of 30 to 60 proceed through the two-semester coursework in cohorts. In this session, a panel of instructors from the Engineering Technology department will discuss their own experience with the cohort model and what they see as the benefits and disadvantages of the strategy in context of research into this instructional approach. Audience members will be encouraged to bring questions and share their own insights and experience with the learning community structure. Data will be collected in the workshop and summarized in comparison to the literature. Any suggestions for implementation or improvement to this approach in general at SJR State going forward will be documented and shared.
