Faculty Prep Week & Convocation

August 19 - 23, 2024

During Faculty Prep Week there are faculty meetings, webinars, and events.

  • Attendance at faculty meetings is limited to department or committee members and attendance is required.

    • Unless a campus and room number are provided, all meetings are online. 

  • Webinars are open to everyone and are optional.

  • Faculty Convocation is held at the Thrasher-Horne Conference Center on the Orange Park Campus from 8:30 - 3:00.

    • Attendance at Convocation is required for all full-time faculty.

Faculty Convocation – Thursday, August 22

Location: Thrasher-Horne Center, Orange Park Campus (Directions)

Attire: Casual professional - no suits or shorts, please.

Attendance: Required for all full-time faculty.

8:30 - 8:55  Check-in

9:00 - 12:30  Opening General Session with Lunch Provided

  • Welcome and Housekeeping: Dr. Melanie Brown, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

  • Mission Moment: Michelle Sjogren, AVP for Institutional Advancement & Strategic Communication

  • Introduction of New Full-time Faculty: Dr. Edward Jordan, Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs and Chief Academic Officer

  • State of the College: Joe Pickens, J.D., SJR State President

  • 10-minute break

  • Introduction of Guest Speaker: Dr. Edward Jordan

  • Collegiate Mental Health: Are the 20s the New Teens? presented by Dr. Ernesto Escoto, Interim Vice President of Health and Wellbeing, University of Florida

  • Lunch provided    

12:40 - 3:00  Small Group Breakout Sessions

To keep groups small and allow for discussion, faculty have been assigned to a group based on the first letter of their last name. Each group rotates through the three 40-minute breakout sessions; all Faculty attend all three breakout sessions.

SJR State's Instructional Design staff will be in L-116 after Convocation until 5:00 for in-person help.

About Our Guest Speaker

Photo of Dr. Ernesto EscotoDr. Escoto currently serves as the University of Florida’s (UF) interim vice president of Health and Wellbeing within the Division of Student Life. In this role, he supports the Campus Assistance & Resources for Empowerment office within the Dean of Students, Counseling and Wellness Center, where he serves as executive director, Disability Resource Center, and GatorWell Health Promotion Services. In his previous roles, he served as director of the Counseling Center at the University of Miami and associate director/director of clinical services at the Counseling and Consultation Service at The Ohio State University. Dr. Escoto earned a PhD in Counseling Psychology from New Mexico State University and completed a doctoral internship in psychology at the University of California, Berkely. He enjoys spending time at home with his spouse, Luz Maria, and their two Irish Doodles, Tucson and Berlin. He and his spouse enjoying running 10Ks and half-marathons as well as tent camping in northern Georgia.
